Akicon 2013

This past weekend was Akicon 2013!!

This was my first year at Akicon, but if you are active in the Washington con scene you would know that Akicon had a pretty bad reputation. But I decided to try my luck since I was itching for another con and they had some good prizes.

Day 1 was a friday, both my friend and I had classes so we didn’t leave until around 1 which means we didn’t get to con till around 4. So while it seems like most of the day would be over it wasn’t! xD I quickly changed into Merida and we picked up our badges. Badge pick up was not only located in a terrible spot but also was a bit odd. Generally when you pre-order a badge they ask to see your ID to make sure it’s actually you, well they didn’t. It was strange. After getting our badges we felt a bit lost, since this was our first time at this con and hotel and there were a bunch of people crowded everywhere! So we ended up moving up stairs to check out the artist alley.

The Artist alley was set up in 3 separate rooms with tables all around. There was some super cute stuff! Some amazing artists, some crafters, jewelry makers and more! I ended up getting a $1 chibi of me as Merida. It’s super cute! (:

After we checked out the artist alley we crossed the hall and headed to the arcade! I have to say that they arcade was the coolest part of Aki! They had a bunch of old systems set up and a few new ones (like aPS3 with Project Diva!!! :D) and a bunch of coin games! I’m a sucker for coin games and it was even better since they were free! Safe to say we spent a bunch of time there. xD There was also a room full of little sets to use for cosplay photos! Super fun!!

After that we headed down to the lobby to meet with Natasha of Fearless Photoworks! You might remember that my last post was of photos I got from her of my SS Zelda costume! Well this time I shot with her to get photos of Merida!! It’s always so much fun to shoot with her since she’s just super friendly and funny and knows how to take beautiful photos! Sadly it was pretty dark out so we didn’t get very many shots, but I’m still super excited to see them! I’m hoping to shoot with her again soon!

By that time it had gotten pretty late so we went back up to the arcade, played a few games and then met with Kevin and Jason. We caught up a little bit, talked about cosplay, and such! Jason showed me some characters from Eternal Sonata, a game I’ve always wanted to play, the designs are beautiful! I hope to play the game and cosplay from it soon! After that we went back to our hotel, ordered a pizza then went to sleep!

Day 1

Day 1

The next day (day 2) was busy busy busy! We woke up at 8Am and spent 2 hours getting me into my Princess Zelda costume and Puppet Make-up! That was an adventure! We used a mix of Ben Nye cake make-up and liquid eyeliner and sealed it with Ben Nye powder and Hair spray! It still rubbed a little bit, but stayed vibrant through out the day! That morning we went to con and went through the dealers hall. The dealers hall was incredible! It was huge and spacious and had a large variety of dealers! I liked it wayyyy better than Kumoricon’s. However I had absolutely no money to spend at this con. ): There was even a dealer who would take a 3D image of you and you could get it 3d printed! I totally wanted to do that! xD

Day 2

Day 2

That morning I also met LumosCosplay she was super sweet and made an adorable Jinx! I hope to meet up with her more at future cons. Then when we sat down for our ‘lunch’ (aka granola bars.) we were asked to be interviewed for TV! So if you live near Seattle next year be sure to watch “Adventure Tv” in October to see if you can see me!! Then after that I shot with Estellia Photography. This was my first time shooting with her! It was amazing! She has such an amazing artistic eye and made me look amazing! I can’t wait to see the photos!! Then after we were walking back to the hotel another photographer said “I love your DA!”! I’ve never had someone recognize me for my DA before! So if that was you thank you for making my day. <333 Shortly after that Photographer Toshiyasu Morita asked to get my photo and I happily obliged! As I was on my way to the cosplay contest I got stopped again by someone to be interviewed and also was stopped by Marika Tzantarmas to take a video of me! :D

Now we come to the cosplay contest. Now first let me say that prier to con I had asked staff many questions about the contest since there was literally no info online, and they were all very rude to me. When I got to staging there was no coordinator. They didn’t show up until an hour after call time. Then when they got there they didn’t apologize for being late but rather made a rude comment to the one group they knew then came around to everyone else. Over all she was just very unprofessional. Anyway onto the contest! The set up was that you went on stage and did your skit, went off stage then the judges spoke to you. The judges seemed to really love my skit. Everyone was impressed with my costume, thought my concept was awesome and artistic, thought I did an amazing job matching my movements to my music and got tons of feels from my skit. xD Overall it seemed like they LOVED it! However I wished they would have given some constructive comments rather than all feel good comments. But, that’s just me, I’m sure most of the contents would have hated to have heard criticism. I was able to watch most of the skits and thought they were mostly ok. However who wouldn’t think that their skit was the best? xD

Here are my opinions on the winners. (3rd) Cinnamon Sticks; a Homestuck skit with pretty much the same story as mine. They had some technical difficulties with their music. But some cool costumes, and neat (yet way to repetitive) choreography. (2nd) The Beasts of Hentai; a Free/AoT skit. I honestly couldn’t stand this skit. Basically it was just a bunch of naked men dancing around to really loud music. I didn’t really get a story from it. However some of their tricks were really cool. And (1st) The Doctor Sings; he was really nice (I talked to him before the show) He did a parody of a song with Akicon lyrics. It was pretty dang funny!

Here’s my skit!

I was pretty disappointed that I didn’t place, since I felt that I did really really well, but it’s all good. After the contest I went to get my bags from the green room and apparently they were moved, the same lady from before was quite rude about it too. They moved all our bags to the lost and found and they even lost my phone! I came to find that she is one of the founders of Akicon. I would think she would have a little bit better of an attitude but whatever.

After this we went back to the hotel, ate some food and changed in to Merida again. I would have changed to ALO Asuna but it was way too cold!! We got back to con and shot with Holly and Kevin of Elite Cosplay! I LOVE shooting with them, they are so nice and always bring in new concepts and ideas to a shoot. After this we met with my friend Kevin and just chilled some! We walked back to the hotel stopped at Jack in the Box to get Milkshakes and called it a night!

The third day was very short! I wore Rena from Higurashi! Weeks before the con I had an idea for a shoot but couldn’t find a photographer who would be there on day 3 to play out my shoot. Luckily I ran into Toshiyasu Morita again and asked if he would like to help me with my shoot! He said yes so we went down to a creepy hallway and took some amazing photos! I’ll show them to you all once I get them sometime after Halloween! (: Afterwards I tried to find RikkuGrape, since I wanted to meet her, but had to get going since I had school the next day. Hopefully I get to meet her next con!

Overall it was a really neat con with tons of personality and an amazing dealers hall! The staff was mostly friendly asides from that one founder, so I’d say it’s improved a ton from what I heard about last year and I’m excited to go next year!

Look for me at my next con! ChibiChibiCon 2014! :D
